Janis Mercer: New and Upcoming Releases

Janis Mercer (2017, 2011, 2009 alum) announced that her CD of music by Anton Webern is now available.

For the 60th anniversary of the death of Anton Webern, Ms. Mercer asked professional and student composers from the San Francisco Community Music Center to write short pieces using the tone row Webern used in his composition, Kinderstück. These pieces appear on Ms. Mercer’s just released CD, Anton von Webern Complete Piano Music and works inspired by them on Centaur Records.

Also, "MW" from Alphabet, her composition for percussion and fixed electronics, was premiered in March 2019 at University of North Carolina—Pembroke by Joseph Van Hassel. Alphabet, a project commissioned by Joseph Van Hassel for solo percussion and fixed electronics includes numerous solo percussion movements that can be performed in whole or in part, based on a letter of the alphabet. Alphabet will be published by Media Press in 2020 or early 2021.

Ms. Mercer worked on both these projects during her last residency at KHN.

The staff is engaged but is also very conscious of respecting the time and space of each resident. Nebraska City has excellent institutions but still provides a quiet and slow-paced setting. The space and set up were great! This is one of my favorite residencies thus far. The location of the apartment wasn't too far from civilization but also in a good area for it not to be super noisy nor was there lots of traffic or other sounds. The middle school across the street wasn't at all a distraction. I also really loved the dessert spots and greatly appreciated the staff's flexibility and availability to help, answer questions, drive you to the store when needed. All the details were thought of right down to a bathroom mat and miscellaneous supplies available in its own closet.
