Tom Dempster
Thomas Dempster is a composer, bassoonist, and educator residing in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he is the founding faculty member for the music program at the University of Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), where he also serves as the Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities.
With over 100 completed works and nearly 400 performances across four continents, Dempster’s music ranges from acousmatic and musique concrète works to sound installations and video works, to pieces for wind ensemble and full orchestra. Most at home writing chamber and smaller-ensemble works, Dempster’s output is influenced by mythology and folklore from across the world, particularly those from his ancestral roots in Eastern Europe and the Baltics, as well as literature, politics, and the paranormal. A recipient of various honors, grants, and commissions, Dempster holds degrees from UNC Greensboro (BM) and the University of Texas (MM, DMA).
