Maya McCollum is an interdisciplinary artist from upstate NY. Her work makes use of gathered objects and attends to their unspoken stories. She uses sound, animation, projection, performance, and sculpture, combining visual and sonic practices to discuss environmental concerns. Improvisation is a significant part of Maya's compositional and performance practice, and she often works on violin and modular eurorack systems. In both her sound and visual work, she strives to create organic, visceral, and personal environments that examine our connection to the natural world. Recently, Maya received the Allen Strange Award from the Society of Electroacoustic Music in the U.S. (2022), was invited to show work at the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (2023), attended a residency at the Yale Norfolk School for the Arts (2022), and received a scholarship to study textiles at the Penland School of Craft (2023) to name a few. In 2023 Maya completed a BA and BM in Studio Art and Music Technology at Oberlin College and Conservatory.
