Jennifer Lauren Smith
Jennifer Lauren Smith was born in Portland, Maine in 1979 and grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida. She attended Reed College in Portland, OR where she completed a thesis on phenomenology in the work of Robert Morris in 2002. Upon graduation Jennifer moved to New York City where she co-founded "Decoradar," a conceptual mural-painting service, and later operated an underground bed & breakfast for European tourists in Chinatown. Jennifer completed her Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA in 2011. She has been the recipient of several awards including the Toby Devon Lewis Award in 2011 and has been an artist-in-residence at Seven Below Arts Initiative in Westford, VT, and Art Farm, in Marquette, NE. Deaf since her late teens, her work in sculpture, photography and video explores the psychology of landscapes with an emphasis on implying sound and auditory experience through metaphor.
