Jennifer Bockelman
Sometimes as a child, when Jen Bockelman would ask her mother to be "the helper," she'd instead be given the job of being "the watcher." Her post-studio practice vacillates between these two roles. As watcher, she re-frames artifacts of her small mid-Western town that reflect the constructed story of its identity (self-reliant, hospitable, gossipy). As helper, she creates temporary charitable, educational, and social work projects that are involuntary collaborations; that function as critique of charitable and artistic genres that presume to create "authentic" relationships, as well as indict her own motivations. She is simultaneously sincere and snarky, helpful yet unconstructive. Jen is based in Seward, Nebraska.
