Andrew Zimmerman
Andrew Zimmermann was born and grew up in the Washington, DC area, primarily Northern Virginia. While in Prescott, Arizona, at college, he made the acquaintance of several artists connected with the photographer Frederick Sommer. Exposure to the photographs of Sommer and to the works of his contemporaries and predecessors played a major role in developing his understanding of photography and of visual art in general. Andrew works with a large-format camera that conveys images onto 8x10 inch sheet film. His photographs are gelatin-silver contact prints, created by pressing the negative between sensitized photographic paper and a sheet of glass, exposing the materials to light, and developing the paper in traditional darkroom chemistry. This method preserves the highest level of detail from the negative, leading to razor-sharp definition and a rich palette of tonal values.
