Gabriella R. Tallmadge named 2020 Djanikian Scholar

KHN Alum (2015) Gabriella R. Tallmadge has been named one of The Androit Journal's 2020 Djanikian Scholars. The 2020 class of Gregory Djanikian Scholars in Poetry includes Bryan Byrdlong (of Ann Arbor, MI), Steven Duong (of San Diego, CA), Sara Elkamel (of Brooklyn, NY), Matthew Gellman (of Brooklyn, NY), Ae Hee Lee (of Milwaukee, WI), and Gabriella R. Tallmadge (of Murrieta, CA).

In honor of the contributions renowned poet Gregory Djanikian (b. 1949) has made to the field and study of literature, The Adroit Journal is proud to announce the third class of Gregory Djanikian Scholars in Poetry—"six exciting, emerging poets we should all be watching." Selected from a competitive pool of international applicants, Djanikian Scholars will receive cash prizes and publication. Among her many other published works, Gabriella's poem,“Nebraska City,” was one of two of her poems published in Mid-American Review: Vol. XXXVIII, No. 1, in 2017.

Gabriella R. Tallmadge is a Latinx writer and educator from San Diego, California. Her poetry has received awards from the Hedgebrook Writer in Residence Program, the Community of Writers Workshop, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Gabriella’s poems have previously appeared in The Georgia Review, Crazyhorse, Guernica, Mid-American Review, and Best New Poets. The interdisciplinary structure is really beneficial and generates unique conversations while providing mutual inspiration for residents. The staff is engaged but is also very conscious of respecting the time and space of each resident. Nebraska City has excellent institutions but still provides a quiet and slow-paced setting. The apartment and studio are well equipped, clean, and well maintained.

The staff was so helpful and accommodating. I couldn't believe how easy they made everything. They also were always ready to find things for me and share resources. This made everything so much easier since I had travelled from too far to bring a lot of extra items for my studio practice. I loved that there was a mix of writers, artists and composers. This mix made for great conversations and interesting meetings.

The space and set up were great! This is one of my favorite residencies thus far. The location of the apartment wasn't too far from civilization but also in a good area for it not to be super noisy nor was there lots of traffic or other sounds. The middle school across the street wasn't at all a distraction. I also really loved the dessert spots and greatly appreciated the staff's flexibility and availability to help, answer questions, drive you to the store when needed. All the details were thought of right down to a bathroom mat and miscellaneous supplies available in its own closet.
