Draw-4
Draw-4
My work explores how fantasy, history, and personal narrative grapple with the disorientation of cultural hybridity. I primarily work with ceramics, as it directly engages with various forms of transformation: ranging from the physical metamorphosis of ceramic as a material, to the labor of my studio practice mirroring self growth, and through the abstraction of content through various translations of historical information.
Draw-4 is inspired by hwatu 화투, also known as flower cards, a Korean playing card game used to gamble or tell fortunes. The content and assembly of these cards are reimagined through a series of relief-carved or painted ceramic tiles, sculptures, and ritualistic objects.
